But there’s much more to them than that. Domesticated in Saudi Arabia’s Empty Quarter for more than 5,000 years, they initiated international trade. Without them the great overland silk and spice routes would never have been born. Today their bedouin owners treasure them like their own children, and bemoan that their upkeep is so much more expensive!
